Kitten Eye · what the shape actually is

PEAK inner outer steps down both ways from the peak lashmatrix.org
The shape the definition describes — proportions only, no numbers.
Principle What the term means geometrically

A kitten eye is not a different shape from a cat eye. It is the same instruction — climb steadily along the lid to a peak in the outer quarter, keep the tail parallel rather than lifted — issued at a fraction of the amplitude. The diminutive in the name is doing real work: everything about the map is the cat's, scaled down until it sits just above what the eye already does.

That makes it the one member of the rising family defined by restraint, and the definition holds without any of the usual specs. Where cat and fox divide by direction — along the lid versus off it — kitten divides from cat by amount. Push the rise of a kitten map and at some point it simply becomes a cat eye; there is no third geometry hiding in the word. What the client is buying is a lift that survives daylight and an office, not a photograph.

Built against the principle, it looks like this

WRONG a flick stapled to a flat map RIGHT a shallow climb, held to the corner lashmatrix.org
Range The bands, not a single value
Where the peak sits
The outer quarter, same as a cat eye. Moving the peak inward to soften the effect is the wrong lever — that changes the shape. Softness comes from amplitude, never from position.
How much total rise
From barely past the eye's own gradient to roughly half of what a committed cat map would carry. Past the halfway mark the set answers to the other name.
How the inner half behaves
Natural. No holding back, no flattening — the inner corner is built as the eye grows it, which is what keeps the result deniable.
What the tail does
Follows the lid, one curl family with the body of the set. The tail of a kitten map should be the least remarkable part of it.

The soft end of the band.
Zone order · bar = relative length Z1 Z2 Z3 Z4 Z5 Z6 PEAK Z7 inner outer lashmatrix.org
The strong end of the band — same definition, same name.

The soft end is close to a natural map with a tidied corner; the strong end is where kitten hands over to cat. Both are inside the name. The working question is not which one is correct but which one she believes she asked for — this is the map most often ordered from a word rather than a picture.

Fit Which eyes it suits, which it breaks

Suits it as it comes

AlmondThe default case. Nothing needs correcting, and the small rise reads as good luck rather than good work — which is precisely the brief.
RoundA gentle lengthening breaks the circle without announcing itself. The full cat version can look like a costume on a very round eye; the kitten version rarely does.
Close-setA soft outward pull is enough to open the bridge, and this map applies exactly that and nothing more.

Suits it once the map is adjusted

HoodedWorks with the peak stepped one zone inward so the rise clears the fold. At kitten amplitude there is little length to hide, which makes it more forgiving here than its bigger relative.
DownturnedThe largest rise a downturned eye forgives, and only as a lift-led build: minimal extra length at the tail, the climb carried by direction. Anything stronger follows the lid down.
Deep-setFine once the whole map is kept modest — the brow bone swallows drama anyway, so the restraint costs nothing that would have been seen.

Collapses on it — and why

A brief that actually needs a catThe honest failure. On a client whose corner genuinely droops or whose eye needs visible elongation, a kitten map is a correction administered at a dose that does not treat.
Wide-setThe pull is gentler than a cat's but it points the same way — outward. On eyes already far apart, even a small amount of it is spent making the one thing worse that needed no help.
A photograph briefNot a shape failure but the predictable one. A kitten map is designed not to show in pictures; a client who chose it from a picture chose a cat eye and used the softer word.
Zones What changes zone by zone
Inner zonesBuilt natural, and left alone. Restraint here is not a technique, it is the definition — an inner half that has been worked on reads as a different map.
Middle zonesA climb so shallow it has to be even. At cat amplitude a small step between neighbours hides inside the drama; at kitten amplitude the same step is the most visible thing on the lid.
Outer zonesWhere the whole effect lives, in the smallest space. The peak takes the last clean step and the tail refuses the flick — one zone jumping at the end is the signature of the map built against its own principle.
Zone order · bar = relative length Z1 Z2 Z3 Z4 Z5 Z6 PEAK Z7 inner outer lashmatrix.org
Build order, inner to outer — the zone that carries the effect is flagged.
Can a DIY cluster set approximate thisCloser than any other rising map, and it is fair to say so. A softly graduated cluster set produces a shallow climb along the lid, which is most of what a kitten eye is. What the strip cannot judge is dosage against her own gradient — the entire definition is just-above-natural, and natural is hers, not the strip's. On an eye whose own lashes already lift at the corner, the strip overshoots into cat; on a flat line it undershoots into nothing. The map is easy to copy and the calibration is not.
Open The definition is open

Any map that climbs along the lid to an outer-quarter peak and deliberately holds the rise near the eye's own gradient is a kitten eye here — whatever the technique, whoever taught it, however the amplitude is dosed. The boundary with cat is a band, not a line, and where your house draws it is information the library wants: send your version and it stands beside this one, under your name.

FAQ Common questions

What is the difference between a kitten eye and a cat eye?

Amount, not shape. Both climb along the lid to a peak in the outer quarter with the tail kept parallel; a kitten map holds the total rise to roughly half of a cat's or less. Push a kitten's amplitude and it becomes a cat eye — there is no other difference to find.

Is a kitten eye good for hooded eyes?

It is one of the better rising maps for them. With the peak stepped a zone inward to clear the fold, the small amplitude means little of the work disappears under skin — the usual hooded-eye tax on a cat map is paid on length the kitten version never carried.

Why does my kitten eye not show up in photos?

Because it is working. The map is defined as sitting just above the eye's own gradient, which is exactly the band a camera flattens out. A client who wants the lift visible in pictures wants more amplitude, and more amplitude has another name.

Can a kitten eye be built on downturned eyes?

Carefully, and it is the only member of the rising family worth attempting there. The build has to be lift-led — direction doing the work, almost no added length at the tail — because any real length at the corner of a downturned eye follows the lid down. Kept small, the tilt reads; pushed, it droops.

Nothing above settles what the word means. It states the geometry the word usually points at — and any way of building that geometry has an equal claim to the name. The principle decides, not us, and not whoever taught you.

So if you build this differently and it holds, that is not a wrong version. Send it and it goes up beside this one, under your name, from your own account, removed the moment you want it gone. A definition with two accepted readings is a better definition than one with an owner.
