Why Why it is laid out this way
This is the map most schools reach for first on a downturned client, and there is a reason. Putting the height over the middle of the eye changes the whole aperture — the eye reads rounder and more open, and the corner that falls stops being the thing you notice. In single strands it is also unusually easy to check: one length per zone, no fan variables in the way.
The order the zones go in
- Keep the head modestThe first zone is the shortest on the map. Its job is to disappear so the middle can do the talking.
- Climb fast to the middleThe step from the second zone to the third is the biggest on this map. That quick rise is what opens the eye.
- Crown the centreLongest strands sit directly over the pupil. Set this zone first and map everything else relative to it.
- Step down evenly outwardThree zones after the centre, each a hair shorter than the last, ending well below the crown.
- Strengthen curl at the tailThe outer two zones take a stronger curl while staying short. This is where the lift is finished, not with reach.
The length curve
The curve climbs quickly and then walks down at an even pace, which is not how a natural lash line behaves — and that difference is the effect. A round, tall middle pushes the visual centre of the eye upward, so the observer stops reading the corner as the low point of a slope. The even taper afterwards keeps the outer half quiet enough that nothing competes with the crown.

- This cell, and the plainest version of the correction: the crown is built from single long strands standing on the strongest lashes in the lid. Nothing is hidden, so a centre zone that is a step too long shows immediately.
- Handmade volume
- Fans would let the crown look fuller without getting taller, which is a real option on a client whose centre lashes are fine. In singles that trade is unavailable — the crown gets its presence from height alone.
- Promade / pre-made fans
- Their consistency suits a map that is judged on how even the taper looks. The catch on this shape is the outer zones, where a stock fan tends to be more than those small, steeply angled lashes want to hold.
- Woven / clover
- They spread sideways, and a doll map is asking for vertical. Across the crown especially, width flattens the roundness you are trying to build.
Spread angle versus weight
There is no spread to set in a one-to-one map, so the crown's presence has to come from length and curl alone — and only one of those is free. That makes the centre zone the cell's real constraint: it must be tall enough to lift the eye and still sit inside what the strongest lashes on the lid will hold without bending. If in doubt, keep the crown a step shorter and take the difference in curl.
What the natural lash can carry
- The crown is the ceiling on this map. When the centre strands start to bend under their own reach, the eye stops looking rounder even though the set is complete and nothing has shed.
- Every extra step of length on the crown adds mass and moves it further from the root at the same time, and unlike the corner zones there is nothing shorter alongside to share the visual load.
- The centre zone is not uniform either — the thinnest lashes in it should get a step less length than their neighbours, or they sag alone and pit the top of the curve.
Where this map fails first
The middle is where this map is under most stress, because that is where the longest single strands are. If they were mapped a step too tall, they do not fall out — they lean, and the whole eye quietly loses the openness the client came for. The outer zones survive longer here than on most downturned maps precisely because they were mapped short. When a doll set stops working, look at the centre before you blame retention.

Why is the doll map recommended so often for downturned eyes?
Because it corrects by addition somewhere safe. Height over the pupil opens the eye without putting any load on the corner that is already falling.
How far below the centre should the outer zones sit?
Far enough that the difference is obvious in the mirror — the last zone lands under half the crown. Anything closer and the two high points start competing.
Does a doll map make the eyes look wider apart?
It can, since the emphasis moves to the middle of each eye. On a downturned client who is also close-set that is usually welcome; on a wide-set one, consider a map with more outer presence.
Can I use one curl across the whole lid?
You can, but you lose the free part of the lift. Stepping the curl up in the outer two zones holds the tail's tips high while their length keeps falling.
